This is, to me, an amazing photograph to contemplate in the context of Wieners' whole poetic output. The only Photographic analogy I can make in my life time (generational difference) is my highschool class picture. Since I went to a school that had to have the "right" photographer, we all have that mid-century, foreward looking gaze in our eyes. He is beautiful here. Maybe I would give it the pretentious title "the poet before poetry" or "the poet before the storm." ;)

This is my favorite picture of Wieners. He still looks so young, beatiful, confused. I think it's one of my favorite pictures *period*.
Lately I've been thinking about poetry and photography: when and where they should come together and when one should over take the other. This is part of an ongoing project.
In his memoirs from this time (The Journal of John Wieners is to be Called 707 Scott Street For Billie Holiday, 1959), Wieners makes the following amusing observation:

"Irene Taverner said in the room and others present are Joanne Kyger, Tom Field, James Kity, Mrs. Nemi Frost-Hansen, Jack Spicer, Robert Duncan, Joe Dunn, Mrs Carolyn Dunn, George Stanely and Tommy Albright and--oh yes--Ebbe Borregaard is sitting between Nemi Frost-Hansen and Jack Spicer...and we are all here for poetry that no one is reading [my emphasis]"(16).

Having a Fresca with Rob Thomas

is even more fun than listening to Coldplay, Avril Lavigne,
      Eminem, Bon Jovi, Dave Mathews
or being sick to my stomach on the giant nickel in
      Sudbury
partly because with his seven inches of manhood Rob looks like a
      better happier Ron Jeremy
partly because of my love for Rob Thomas partly because of my
      love for celebrity weight loss stories
partly because of the illuminating words of this exit ramp
      poet
partly because of the secrecy my smile takes as I read tabloid
      covers at checkout stands
it is hard to believe when I' m listening to Rob that there can be
      anything as still
as solemn as his ecclesiastical, angelic voice when I turn the
      radio dial
and through the airwaves unknown sounds drift back and
      forth
between Rob and me like sounds that were not written for me
and then all my others CDs seem to have no music on then at all,
      just plastic
you suddenly wonder why anyone ever did them
                                                                            I listen
to Rob Thomas and I would rather listen to him than all the
      musicians in the world
except maybe the Notorious BIG occasionally and anyway he's
      dead
which thank heavens means Rob Thomas hasn't gone to see him
      yet so we can go together the first time
and the fact that Rob Thomas moves so beautifully takes
      care of music videos
just as at home I never think of nekkid girls or
at a rehearsal for my Rob Thomas cover band I never play other
      tunes that used to wow me
and what good does all of pop music history do
      anyone
when they never got Rob Thomas to be in their band
      at the right moment
or for that matter what good are the Beatles when they didn't build
      a time machine to come and get Rob Thomas
it seems they were all cheated of some
      marvellous experience
which is not going to go wasted on me which is why I'm
      digging in Rob’s garbage.

Boy-Howdy, I Like Dennis Cooper Poetry!

Pouring over one of Dennis Cooper's early poetry volumes, Idols, I found a few jems I wanted to share.

First of all, the best author bio of all time. These things should be required, especially of academics!

Dennis Cooper was born 1/10/53 in Pasadena, California. Organized The Hampton Street Playhouse, a children's theatrical group, at age ten. President of his local chapter of The Dave Clark Five Fan Club. Edited a satirical magazine, Flunker, at twelve. Cub Scout. Most unpopular kid in school. Fifth through Eighth grades. Accidentally hit on the head with an axe, barely survives, 1964. Boy Scout, kicked out for long hair. One year of acting lessons at The Pasadena Playhouse. First and last girlfriend, Susie, 1966. Transferred to private boys' school. Began writing poetry at fourteen after reading Rimbaud and Lautreamont. Also drew pictures, eventually gave that up. Worked for Eugene McCarthy Presidential Campaign, Washington, D.C., 1968. Vice-President of his class, Ninth and Tenth grades. Formed shock-rock band Coney Island, lasted six months. Expelled from private school in Eleventh grade, for insubordination. Returned to public school. One year of recorder lessons, formed recorder consort Tag Rag, lasted six weeks. Believed in Meher Baba, lasted one year. Formed folk band Changing Horses, lasted three months. Traveled the U.S.A. Published first chapbook of poems The Terror of Earrings, 1973. Hung around Glitter Rock clubs, had sex with the famous. First boyfriend, Julian. Spent two years at the local junior college, winning all literary awards. One year at Pitzer College in Claremont. Disc jockey at the radio station SKPC-FM, Pomona. Quit school at the urging of his poetry professor. Traveled Europe the summer of 1976. Formed New Wave band The Same in early 1977, lasted three months. Started Little Caesar Magazine and Press soon thereafter, which he still heads. Currently living in West Los Angeles, is twenty-six years old, 6'1", 175lbs., has short brown hair and blue eyes.

Temporary friends.

San Francisco's where they're heading,
to be jazz greats. But L.A.
is where they'll end, working in record stores,
paying a hundred bucks a copy
for Miles at the Regent.

For now, they hang around my place
trying Coltrane for size,
growing out their boy's haircuts.
I am less ambitious, by far.
One hand casually drapes their waists;
with the other I conceal my hard on.

Looking over some photos
of autistic children
I worked with last summer
they seem happy, unruly,
making Hell of wild flowers.

One bites her own hand.
One can't settle down
at his mother's commanding.
They've gone the wrong way
under close supervision

and the tragedy is that
they're physically beautiful,
kids folks would choose
from the paints of Europe
to be their own children.

But they're farther away
then the ones in paint,
than the ones in myth,
and even adoption's
no way to protect them

though some of us try to
while shining with laughter.
That's all we can do, and
herd them from bedtime
to bedtime, like bad angels.
